Guangzhou Haizhu Bay Tunnel project is expected to connect in July this year. During the Spring Festival, the construction of the project accelerated.
The project was invested and constructed by Guangzhou Communications Investment Group and undertaken by China Railway 14th Bureau Group. During the Spring Festival, over 200 management personnel and workers stayed on-site, completing the demolition and reconstruction of the northern half of the Sanxiang Interchange section of the Ring Expressway for 12 consecutive days.
On Feb 18, two large-diameter tunnel boring machines fully commenced tunneling operations at the construction site of the tunnel project's starting well.
The Haizhu Bay Tunnel boring has passed through several significant risk construction points, with an expected connection in July this year. The total investment in the project is 11.68 billion yuan ($1.62 billion), and it is in the northern section of the Guangzhou South Station Express Channel. The tunnel is 4.35 kilometers long, with a maximum excavation diameter of 15.07 meters, and is expected to be completed and open to traffic in June 2025.
Once completed, the project will form a fast passage between the city center and Guangzhou South Station, potentially shortening travel time to 15 minutes, enhancing the transportation capacity of Guangzhou South Station, and promoting connectivity in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
