Guangzhou algorithm competition attracts 5,000 participants

Thousands of enthusiasts are fighting it out in the second Guangzhou Pazhou Algorithm Competition, which is being held in Haizhu. 3,307 teams from home and abroad registered to compete, with more than 5,000 participants involved.

This competition is organized by the Guangzhou municipal government, the Haizhu district government, the science and technology bureau of Guangzhou, the industry and information bureau of Guangzhou and the Guangdong Laboratory for the AI and Digital Economy (Guangzhou).

With its slogan of "Optimize AI algorithms, make the world smarter," the tournament has set up five individual competitions that focus on green energy, intelligent transportation, intelligent manufacturing, e-commerce and cutting-edge technology.

The participants include companies, universities and innovation and entrepreneurship teams from more than 20 countries, including China, the United States, Russia, the United Kingdom, Germany, Singapore, Italy, Canada and Israel.

The organizers arranged for 485 works from enterprises to enter the preliminary round, mainly from Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Hangzhou, as well as 36 works from overseas enterprises. Huawei, Alibaba, Bytedance and other leading companies are participating.

Apart from the corporate involvement, some 48 percent of the participants are from Chinese universities, including Tsinghua University, Peking University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Zhejiang University, Fudan University and Sun Yat-sen University.

There are also 21 teams from foreign universities, among them, Imperial College London, the National University of Singapore, the University of Pennsylvania, the University of Tokyo, the University of Toronto and the Australian National University.

More than 1,200 doctorate and master's degree students have registered for the competition, mainly from computer science and technology, artificial intelligence, data science and big data technology and other majors.

The finals will be held from August to September in Haizhu, with more than 1 million yuan ($137,493) in prize money up for grabs.
