Vipshop, the e-commerce platform that is one of China's biggest discount retailers, recently provided staff with inexpensive apartments in the Haizhu district, with only 300 yuan ($42) per month.

The company spent 120 million yuan to purchase and renovate five 10-level old buildings in Dongfeng village, Haizhu district, and renovated them into residential quarters. The talent apartments cover an area of nearly 30,000 square meters and consist of more than 600 rooms with six different layouts.

The apartments also provide shuttle buses, free fitness centers, libraries and 24-hour property services. They're only a 10-minute drive from the headquarters building of Vipshop, solving the problem of high rent and long commuting distances for its employees. The company says the initiative will help attract and retain personnel and contribute to the development of Guangzhou's digital economy.
