A number of swan geese were recently released into the wild at the Haizhu National Wetland Park.
Swan geese belong to a species native to East Asia. Also known as Chinese geese, they are rare, migratory geese that normally breed in northernmost China and inland Mongolia.
To do so, the wetland park collaborated with the research team from Guangdong Zoo, the Guangdong Wildlife Monitoring and Rescue Center, as well as the Maoming Wildlife Rescue and Research Center.

The research team at Guangzhou Zoo conducted an assessment of the habitat for the swan geese. Because of the favorable ecosystem and environment in the Haizhu National Wetland Park, experts said they chose it as the place to release them.
The liberated birds were equipped with lightweight leg bands and wireless trackers, so the research team can monitor their activities in the open accurately. This allows for a systematic evaluation of the impact of the released swan geese on enhancing the region's urban biodiversity.
Moving forwards, plans are for the Guangzhou Haizhu National Wetland Park and Guangzhou Zoo to expand their joint work to promote biodiversity in Guangzhou.
