In the first quarter of 2023, Haizhu district, Guangzhou, achieved a GDP of 68.85 billion yuan ($9.96 billion), with a year-on-year growth of 6.1 percent.
Of Haizhu's total GDP, the added value of its primary industry was 26 million yuan, with a year-on-year growth of 12.5 percent. The added value of its secondary industry was 17.68 billion yuan, up 13.6 percent year on year. The value added of its tertiary industry was 51.14 billion yuan, up by 4 percent year on year.
GDP, fixed asset investment and domestic tax revenue are three of Haizhu's major economic elements. They grew by 6.1 percent, 20.1 percent and 23.7 percent, respectively.
In Haizhu, the business income from Internet and related services above designated size (enterprises with an annual turnover of over 20 million yuan) increased by 114.5 percent. Additionally, the sales area of commercial houses in real estate development increased by 45.3 percent, while the added value of industries below designated size increased by 43.0 percent.
The accommodation industry increased its turnover by 34 percent, and the catering industry increased its turnover by 14 percent. Meanwhile, the total output value of agriculture, forestry, animal husbandry and fishery increased by 12 percent.
In Haizhu, the growth rate of seven indexes showed significant growth. The district's investment in construction projects, gross industrial output value above designated size, and gross export value all increased by 25 percent, 13.7 percent and 10.7 percent, respectively. Its general public budget revenue, retail goods sales volume, consumer goods sales volume, and wholesale goods sales volume also surged by 10.2 percent, 7.1 percent, 6.8 percent, and 0.3 percent.
In the first quarter, the total profit of enterprises above designated size in Haizhu reached 7.25 billion yuan, an increase of 23.7 percent. These enterprises also employ 341,800 people, an increase of 1.1 percent, and pay a total wage of 13.26 billion yuan, an increase of 6.1 percent.
The research and development expenses of enterprises above designated size in Haizhu increased by 8.5 percent and now exceed 1.81 billion yuan. Among this total, the information industry increased its research and development budget by 16.1 percent, while the industrial industry increased its budget by 10.7 percent.
In the first quarter, Haizhu registered more than 700 new enterprises, focusing on algorithms, data and computing power. Haizhu also signed contracts for 26 projects to settle within the district. In addition, its investments reached 5.5 billion yuan, up 1.5 percent, and its operating income was 88.04 billion yuan, up 6 percent.

Haizhu's online retail sales of physical goods increased by 20.4 percent, while revenue from online hotel reservations and meal deliveries increased by 77.2 percent.
In the first quarter, 55 exhibitions were held in Haizhu, covering an area of 2.04 million square meters, up 175 percent and 155 percent respectively. The district also saw a 30 percent increase in tourist flow at 11 tourist attractions here. Furthermore, the 133rd Canton Fair opened on April 15, with 1.26 million visitors in its first phase, indicating a record high for both exhibition area and visitors.
