Guangdong province has designated March 20 to 26 as Bird Appreciation Week to raise people's awareness of the importance of protecting birds. Haizhu district is holding various popularization activities for it.
Bird Appreciation Week was first established in 1981 to protect birds that were migrating between China and Japan.
Birds play an important role in maintaining the stability of ecosystems, as they are responsible for the transport of seeds and nutrients.
From March 20 to 26, Haizhu Wetland Park and the Guangzhou Zoo will organize publicity activities to introduce knowledge of various birds to the public, trying to spark a passion for bird-watching.
During this week, volunteers from Haizhu Wetland Park will provide visitors with binoculars while they are on the bird-watching walkway. They will also conduct popularization activities, such as teaching visitors how to identify various wetland birds.
Additionally, Haizhu will host a biodiversity forum. Lin Zhibin, from the Haizhu Wetland Research, Publicity and Education Center; Shan Fen, from the Guangzhou Wildlife Research Center; and Jiang Tao, from the Juxian branch of Guangzhou Liwan No 4 Middle School have been invited to share their experiences and insights on bird protection.
