Haizhu promotes reconstruction of urban villages

On Feb 22, the groundbreaking ceremony for the first batch of urban village reconstruction projects in Guangzhou was held in Haizhu district.

Guangzhou's annual fixed-asset investment target for urban renewal in 2023 will reach 200 billion yuan ($29 billion), up more than 60 percent compared to the previous year's figures.

Haizhu district has put forward 195 key tasks, 457 specific tasks and 742 detailed implementation measures for the renovation of urban villages.

Haizhu district will complete the demolition of 1.96 million square meters of illegal construction projects and conduct weekly inspections on illegal facilities. So far this year, Haizhu District has dismantled 194,600 square meters of illegal facilities, up 42.25 percent year-on-year, including 29,200 sq m in Kanglu area.

Haizhu will arrange to have two to three joint law enforcement operations every month, and the district will also install 300 sets of intelligent security prevention and control equipment along with 846 monitors to improve urban village governance.

Recently, Haizhu has divided and classified 61 professional wholesale markets in the Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU) International Innovation Valley. It also divided 7,480 garment factories into A, B and C classes. There are five wholesale markets and 28 garment enterprises in the Class A category, meaning that they are leading in the district. There are 21 markets and 102 enterprises in the Class B category, which will be encourages to make transformations, while markets and enterprises in the Class C category will gradually be closed down.
