Haizhu National Wetland Park, in Guangzhou, was selected as one of 18 wetlands of international importance on World Wetlands Day, Feb 2.

Haizhu Wetland Park was listed because of its geographical rarity, as it is China's only wetland park that is located on the central axis of a mega city. The city abandoned over $1 trillion in commercial development value to keep the wetlands in the city center, as a green haven.

With the goal of building a harmonious place where human beings and nature can coexist, Haizhu Wetland Park promotes the city's sustainable development with its rich biological resources.

The park boasts a forest ecosystem with Lingnan characteristics and preserves traditional agricultural methods such as having raised beds and deep ditches, which is an agricultural technique that has been utilized in China for thousands of years.

In recent years, Haizhu National Wetland Park has developed a reputation both at home and abroad, and has become an important part of Haizhu's "lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets" initiative.

Haizhu district fully benefits from the advantages of a modern city as well as the unique ecological charm of its natural resources, such as its parks and river.
