Yuzhu tunnel, which passes through Haizhu district, has recently made big breakthroughs, local media outlets reported on Dec 28.

The tunnel is one of Guangzhou's key projects, and will have six two-way lanes and a designated speed of 60 kilometers per hour. The 2.6 km tunnel is designed to start from Xingang East Road in the south and connect to Zhuji Road in the north bank of the Pearl River.

As an important channel linking the cities located on the banks of the Pearl River, Yuzhu Tunnel has almost completed the reinforcement of the bank-protection structures at both ends. It is also carrying out construction of the cofferdam as part of the immersed tube interface section.

This is the longest immersed tube tunnel in Guangzhou that crosses the Pearl River twice. Project construction started in September 2021 and is expected to be completed and open to traffic by the end of 2025.

Upon its completion, the tunnel will connect the Science City in the north, and Pazhou, Panyu University City and Innovation City in the south. It is expected to promote the integrative development of the cities on the banks of the Pearl River.
