Many people in Haizhu have been volunteering during the recent COVID-19 outbreak to deliver medicine to people in the district's COVID-19 containment area.
"I have to work from 8:00 in the morning and am busy until after midnight late at night. The other day at 1:00 am, I was still on the road, delivering much-needed medicine to an elderly patient with high blood pressure," said volunteer Shen Qinwei.
Fengyang Street's Kanglu area includes two urban villages, Kangle village and Lujiang village, which cover an area of about one square kilometer and have a resident population of more than 100,000 people, of which more than 95 percent are foreigners. After the communities were closed and placed under COVID-19 control measures, the residents could not go out as usual. However, a key livelihood measure that the district has implemented is to ensure that people's medical consultation and medicine purchase needs are met.
"The medication prescribed by the medical treatment team needs to be delivered to the grid point by volunteers and then dispatched by the grid clerk door to door to residents in the community. In addition, if residents make an order for medication online, volunteers will pick up the medicine and then deliver it to their homes. Volunteers will also prioritize medication delivery to key groups, such as pregnant women, children, and seniors," noted Su Yongdong, the initiator of the medicine delivery volunteer service team.
In just a few days, a volunteer team consisting of 12 people was established to ensure medicine delivery, which has gradually expanded to include dozens of people. The volunteers make use of their familiarity with the district's traffic routes and ride electric bikes to ensure medication is delivered to different communities. Among the volunteers are many people from Sichuan, Chongqing, Hubei, and other provinces and cities.
