This was the first time that Beishan Primary School has participated in a national volleyball event. Previously, they had won 25 championships in provincial and municipal competitions.

Jian Yankai, the principal of Beishan Elementary School, said, "Although we may have a disadvantage in terms of height, we do not lose to our opponents in terms of skills." The average height of the men's team in Beishan Primary School is only 160 centimeters, while the average height of the women's team is 157cm.

Beishan Primary School is located in Beishan village in east Haizhu district. The students are mainly children of villagers and migrant workers in Beishan village. The school has only 12 classes and more than 500 students, but more than a quarter of the students participate in volleyball training.

Huang Weijian, a physical education teacher at Beishan Primary School, was born in Taishan, a county-level city under Jiangmen’s jurisdiction in Guangdong province, which is known as "the hometown of volleyball." He has since used his volleyball expertise to introduce and popularize the sport at the school.

The open-air court of Beishan Primary School is about the size of two basketball courts. On weekdays, it accommodates more than 150 students simultaneously for volleyball training from 7:00 am to the start of class and from 5:00 pm to dark.

Usually, the students practice basic skills, such as padding, passing, and spiking independently against the wall beside the court. They typically train for at least two and a half to three hours a day.
