To date, construction of the main line of this tunnel has been completed, while the overall project is 88 percent completed. Currently, the construction of the ground auxiliary road, as well as the auxiliary mechanical and electrical equipment is being carried out. In addition, monitoring and decoration work in the tunnel is continuing, with the tunnel's completion target set for the end of this year.
The Haizhu Bay tunnel has a total length of 4.35 km. Together with the southern section of the Dongxiaonan Road-Guangzhou South Railway Station line, it will form an express passage from central Guangzhou to Guangzhou South Railway Station. After completion, it will be possible to reach Guangzhou South Railway Station directly from Dongxiaonan Road.

Currently, the main construction of the tunnel project is underway. It is expected to be completed and open to traffic by the end of 2024.
After the completion of the Haizhu Bay tunnel, the travel time from downtown Guangzhou to Guangzhou South Railway Station is expected to be shortened to 15 minutes, enhancing the transportation capacity of Guangzhou South Railway Station, as well as enhancing the status of Guangzhou as an international comprehensive transportation hub.
