A tunnel from Guangzhou Chepi Road to Xinjiao East Road is set to open for traffic by the end of 2022. This tunnel completed the installation of its last immersed tube on Jan 7, which marks the success of the construction of the first immersed tube tunnel with the longest single tube section and full-section pouring in China.

After the tunnel is completed, it will relieve the traffic pressure of Pazhou Bridge and Dongpu Bridge across the Pearl River. The transit time from Haizhu to Tianhe will be shortened from 15 to 30 minutes down to two to five minutes.

The tunnel is 2.07 kilometers long. This project is designed with a road width of 60 meters, a two-way six-lane tunnel section, and a 60 km per hour vehicle speed. The immersed tube section of the Chepi Tunnel is 492 meters long and is divided into four sections with 123 meters long each.

At present, the construction of the tunnel is 73 percent completed with the Haizhu section is fully completed and the Tianhe section 68 percent completed.
