After 150 days of closed construction, the Hedong Bridge reopened to traffic on Jan 10, 20 days ahead of schedule.

Hedong Bridge is a river crossing bridge connecting Haizhu and Liwan districts of Guangzhou. It is located in the backchannel of the Pearl River and is an important part of the urban trunk road in the southwest of Guangzhou. It starts from the Baihedong Interchange in the west, crosses the backchannel of the Pearl River, and ends at the Changgang Interchange in the east. The total length of the main bridge is 648 meters.

The Hedong Bridge is an average daily traffic flow of 130,000 in both directions, making it one of the busiest roads in Guangzhou. It was opened in 1998. Years of overload operation caused damage to the structure. The technical condition was reduced to class D with multiple stay cables requiring change.

Guangzhou's transportation bureau changed 144 stay cables of the Hedong Bridge, laid 40,000 square meters of noise-reducing pavement, and applied 150,000 sq m anti-corrosion coating.
