The foundation pit of the Haizhu Bay Tunnel has begun construction. The tunnel will shorten the driving time from downtown to the Guangzhou South Railway Station to 15 minutes. It is scheduled to be open to traffic by the end of 2024.

Haizhu Bay Tunnel will be built according to urban expressway standards. The total length of the project is 4.35 kilometers, the designated speed is 60 km per hour, and the main line has six lanes. The construction content includes one river-crossing tunnel and three interchanges.

The preliminary preparations for the foundation pit have been completed. The pit's underground diaphragm wall with a depth of 25 meters has been driven into the ground. More than 60 workers are working in the foundation pit, skillfully lifting steel bars and erecting a safety barrier for the pit.

It is expected that by the end of 2022, a shield machine with an outer diameter of 15 meters will commence tunneling from Haizhu to the north. This is also the first road project in Guangzhou that uses a super-large diameter shield machine which will provide new ideas and samples for subsequent tunnel construction.

The Haizhu Bay Tunnel project will also use sound insulation across the entire construction site to reduce noise while improving  driving comfort along the creation of a green road.
